EU Policy on Settlements in the Middle East

Head of Foreign Policy of the European Union (EU) Javier Solana called for freezing all forms of Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories, after meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday 2 September 2009. Javier Solana told reporters the EU position on this issue clearly, and described his conversation with Mubarak as a positive thing. He said the talks with Mubarak focused primarily on efforts to encourage the peace process in the Middle East.

Javier Solana stressed that there is agreement between the EU and Egypt regarding the peace process. He said the two parties can advance the peace process through cooperation. He also called for immediate action to advance the peace efforts before the UN General Assembly. Monday morning, Solana said in Israel that the high-level meeting between the leaders of the United States, Israel and Palestine to rebuild the Middle East peace process can take place at the UN General Assembly later this month.
